Will Doyle

Founder and CEO, Gather · Chartered quantity surveyor · Built the AI QS Agent that reads site diaries and catches missed compensation events before the eight week time bar

Short bio

Will Doyle is the founder and chief executive of Gather, the AI powered commercial record management platform for UK infrastructure contractors. He trained as a quantity surveyor, spent years substantiating change on live projects, and built the company after nearly losing £20 million in entitlement on the North West Electrification Programme because the evidence existed but was scattered across notebooks, spreadsheets and email threads. He founded Raildiary in 2016 and rebranded the business as Gather in 2024 to serve highways, water, aviation, hospitals and energy alongside rail. Gather now manages £400 billion in projects across contractors including Costain, Balfour Beatty, Murphy, Amey and Network Rail.

Long bio

Will joined construction in 2011 as an aspiring quantity surveyor. He quickly ran into the same problem on every project: site records existed, but nobody could find them when it mattered. Instructions sat in a supervisor's notebook. Evidence sat in someone's camera roll. By the time a commercial team needed to substantiate a claim, the notice period had usually expired and the negotiating position had already gone.

That frustration reached its peak on a scheme where Will was responsible for substantiating change on a project worth tens of millions of pounds, held together by patchy paper site diaries. He estimates the business came within touching distance of losing £20 million in entitlement on the North West Electrification Programme purely because the records that proved the work were never assembled in time.

In 2016, Will built the prototype for Raildiary with experienced tech entrepreneur Paul Clegg, onboarding rail contractors and asset owners onto a structured way of capturing site data. In 2024 the business rebranded as Gather to serve infrastructure more broadly: highways, water, aviation, hospitals, energy and more. Gather's QS AI Agent now reviews site diaries against NEC4 clause triggers and flags compensation events before the eight week time bar closes the door on them, identifying up to 40% more compensation events than manual review and cutting administrative workload by 70% on the teams that use it.

Will speaks and writes on the commercial side of construction: how AI changes contract administration, why site records are the evidence that wins or loses disputes, and what NEC4 practitioners get wrong about notification deadlines. He is a chartered quantity surveyor and remains hands on with the product, working alongside Ben Walker (who helped draft NEC4 and founded CEMAR) and Paul Clegg.

"I built Gather because I was sick and tired of terrible, terrible records."

AI in construction commercial managementWhat AI can and cannot do for QS teams today, and where it genuinely changes how compensation events get caught and priced.
NEC4 and compensation eventsThe eight week time bar, clause 60.1 triggers, and why most contractors lose entitlement to a deadline rather than a dispute.
Site records as evidenceWhy scattered records cost money long before a dispute starts, and what a defensible record actually looks like.
Construction tech and the founder journeyBuilding Raildiary in 2016 through to the Gather rebrand in 2024: what practitioner led software gets right that generalist project tools miss.
